NEUNENEU MEANS HUMANITY (film pilot)
In the summer of 2006 five members of the Mehinaku Tribe came to Europe to perform in a collaborative music and cultural project called Neuneneu. The project was the inspiration of UK musician Ravi and the Brazilian composer and singer Marlui Miranda, a woman who has devoted her career to the study, development and protection of the Brazilian indigenous people.
For the Mehinaku Tribe, there is no finer way of expressing their fine spiritual outlook than through their music. To them, every single sound a stone rolling or an arrow cutting the air - is music. Their musical sounds are directly related to their beliefs, heritage and way of life. For them, there are no boundaries between life and music. They are as one.
In addition to the success of the Neuneneu tour, it was possible to film the Mehanaku musicians experiencing European life for the first time, thus creating an amazing record of a unique event. The film features the Neuneneu performances and presents an inspiring picture of the Mehinaku people, showing their particular understanding of humanity and their interaction with the outside world.
The film also tells the story of the tour and the Mehinakus current situation in the Amazon, where they are facing many environmental and cultural threats. Kamaluharre, the main spokesperson for the tribe, tells the story. It includes footage, shot by the tribe themselves, the village leaving ceremony, the long journey to the city, and then on to Europe.
Both Marlui Miranda, an adopted member of the tribe, and Ravi had a unique invitation to visit the Mehinaku in their village. This enabled them tell this story of a secretive tribe who are very protective of their way of life and traditions. It is a truly musical and spiritual journey to the Amazon and the world of the Mehinaku.
